The Simplest Way to Get Honest Feedback From Your Staff

If you want to improve your campus next year, you need better information. Not more data from a report, but real feedback from the people living the work every day. Most principals don’t struggle because they don’t care. They struggle because they don’t always know what’s really going on beneath the surface. Staff will nod in meetings, go along with plans, and then have completely different conversations in the hallway or parking lot. That’s not a people problem. That’s a communication gap.

The simplest way to close that gap is to ask. Not in a formal survey and not in a long meeting with too many people in the room. Just pull together a small group of teachers, paras, and maybe even a parent or two. Keep it small enough where people feel comfortable talking, and then ask one question: what do we need to do better next year?

Then listen. Don’t defend, don’t explain, and don’t try to fix it in the moment. Just listen and take notes. If you do that well, you’ll start to hear patterns. You’ll hear where systems are breaking down, where communication isn’t clear, and where people are frustrated but haven’t felt comfortable saying it out loud. That kind of feedback is gold.

It gives you a clear starting point for next year, helps you focus your energy on what actually matters, and shows your staff that their voice matters. You don’t have to agree with everything you hear, and you don’t have to act on every suggestion, but you do need to understand what people are experiencing. Perception drives culture.

If your staff feels unheard, disconnected, or unclear, that shows up in their work whether you intend it or not. If they feel listened to and understand where the campus is going, you get a completely different level of engagement. This doesn’t take a lot of time and it doesn’t require a big system. It just requires you to be intentional. Ask the question, listen to the answers, look for patterns, and use that information to build something better.
