Doing Cool Stuff!

Writer: John HindsJohn Hinds

Pushing Boundaries in Education

I've always loved doing things that push the boundaries—things no one else is thinking about. As a principal, I was often limited by rules, regulations, and the overall risk-averse culture of education.

It was so frustrating to come up with a great idea for my school only to hear: “If we can’t do it for all of the other schools, we can’t just do it for yours.” I wasn’t worried about the other schools—I was trying to do cool stuff on my campus.

Navigating budget guidelines and restrictions on what I could or couldn’t spend funds on was another constant challenge. It drained my energy and limited the opportunities I wanted to create for students and staff.

Creating Unique Learning Experiences

Still, I managed to pull off some incredible experiences, like taking district leaders on trips to Silicon Valley to visit Google, Apple, Stanford, and more. These “field trips” energized me—I got to learn, explore, and create opportunities that no one else was doing.

Getting to hear directly from the companies that were influencing our technology and lives was an incredible experience. I had full control over the visits, choosing exactly where we went, who we met, and what we learned. These were opportunities most people never get to experience, and they opened up new ways of thinking.

Building Meaningful Moments for Students and Families

It wasn’t just about professional learning—we also built meaningful experiences for kids and their families. Events like Daddy-Daughter Dinners, Buddy Blizzard, and Walzem Words t-shirts brought real joy to the school community.

There’s nothing like setting up an event where students and parents can connect and spend quality time together. Life pulls families in so many different directions, and these moments of connection were priceless. I used to step back, find a quiet spot, and just watch the interactions, conversations, and joy my students experienced with their parents. You can see some examples of this in my video on "10 Ways to Hack School Culture."

Expanding Opportunities Beyond the School System

Now, I have even more freedom to create impactful work. I don’t have the same barriers I had as a principal (though my wife still makes sure I stick to a budget).

I’m constantly making lists of new ideas—things I could do to enhance my life or improve the lives of those around me. Without the restrictions of traditional education systems, the possibilities feel endless.

Launching the School Turnaround Series

I’m excited to release my 12-part School Turnaround series for school leaders. Responsive Learning did an amazing job producing it, and I know it’s going to help campus administrators for years to come.

These courses are specifically designed for leaders stepping into schools that are struggling, but honestly, they would be beneficial for any new or aspiring principal looking to understand the key concepts of school leadership.

After 17 years as a principal, I learned a few things the hard way. These courses are the guide I wish I had when I started—like a Christmas present for school leaders navigating the toughest challenges. You can read more about the 12 courses and how they align to T-PESS here.

Join The Doing Cool Things Group

It feels good to be back to doing meaningful, impactful work—and I’m just getting started.

I thrive when I’m surrounded by people doing cool stuff, too. If that’s you, find me. I’m building a group: TDCTG – The Doing Cool Things Group.

Let’s make things happen.
