Buddy Blizzard: We noticed our students with special needs were not coming to our after hours school events. When speaking with their parents, we learned that those students were too stimulated or intimidated by the atmosphere and large crowds so we created the Buddy Blizzard. This event was just for our students with special needs and their 5th grade Buddies. We replicated all of the Special Olympic activities, customized the food menu, and provided a safe and secure school carnival/festival just for these students. Buddy Program: We were always looking for leadership opportunities for our 5th graders. We found one by helping our students with special needs. Lunch, recess, field trips and anywhere else we could find that our 5th graders could take a leadership role in serving other students. Daddy Daughter Dinner: Sometimes it is our job to provide an opportunity for our parents and students, then get out of the way. The Daddy Daughter Dinner is one of those opportunities. Yes, you can have a Mom-Son Dinner. You can have a Grandparents’ Dinner. What you are doing is providing an opportunity for your students to be seen, heard, loved, etc. Find me if you need me! Walzem Words: We had an idea. An idea to teach our students words that would serve them for life. Just another way my AWESOME staff showed how intentional they were about thinking what would benefit our students.
